It's an exciting time for our team, and we'd like to give you a glimpse of what goes on inside these little huts in the company colours.
Currently, each of our hives houses between 15,000 and 20,000 bees, and we expect this number to rise to 50,000 by September. To ensure their comfort during the cooler months, our hives are equipped with 6 frames. The beekeeper will gradually add extra frames as the weather warms up, with each hive holding up to 10.
Did you know? A fascinating fact about our bees is that we can recognise the queen among the others by a ‘painted’ mark on the top of her head. Each year, a different colour is used to identify the queens, and ours, born in 2024, have a pretty green spot.
To ensure the health of our colony, the beekeeper will visit the hives every week. It's worth noting that these buckfast bees are very gentle, which makes the work much easier.
However, the safety of our bees is paramount, particularly in the face of threats from the Asian hornet. To protect them, it's vital to let the grass grow around the hives, as this makes our bees more agile. In addition, hornet traps will be installed around the hives by our beekeeper in June/July, followed by nets over the hives in late August/early September, the period when hornet attacks are most frequent.
Finally, we're looking forward to collecting the fruits of our labours in October, a period that promises to be as gentle as our bees.
Thank you for following us on this beekeeping adventure! We'll be sharing the next stages of this wonderful adventure with you on a regular basis.
See you soon!
